The E.J. Whitten Prostate Cancer Research Centre at Epworth Hospital

This October, Verica and I will be walking the Italian Camino Via Francigena to raise funds for the vital work of the E.J. Whitten Prostate Cancer Research Centre at Epworth Hospital, led by Professor Nathan Lawrentschuk.
As a cancer survivor, I know how critical early detection, ongoing research, and medical advancements in treatment are in helping people fight—and survive—cancer.
In January 2019, after a year of unexplained illness, I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of stage 4 kidney cancer. The diagnosis was devastating and the prognosis grim. I remember recovering from surgery performed by Professor Lawrentschuk when he shared the news. It changed everything—for me, Verica, and our three children. Verica recalls asking Nathan if there was any hope. He replied, "There’s always hope." Those 3 small words gave us something to hold on to when there was little else.
Now, more than five years later, thanks to the extraordinary care I received at Epworth—especially from Professor Lawrentschuk, Professor Ben Tran, and the incredible oncology team—I’m here to share my story. I even got to ring the gold bell marking the end of my treatment. A day I thought would never come. We celebrated with a family holiday which is where the photo shown here is from. 
We’re walking to give others the same hope and chance at survival. The E.J. Whitten Prostate Cancer Research Centre is working to improve diagnosis and treatment options for prostate cancer—and they need our support to continue saving lives.
